Measure before you change anything. Almost every household assumes it knows what drives its bill, and a surprising number are wrong. Metering typically shows that a small number of loads account for most of the consumption — and they are rarely the ones people suspect.
Three levels of measurement
Whole property
A meter at the distribution board gives your total, and on three-phase supplies also shows imbalance between phases. This is the baseline: without it you cannot tell whether a change actually helped.
Per circuit
Relays and modules with power measurement report each circuit separately. This is where the picture usually becomes clear — the air conditioning circuit against lighting against sockets.
Per appliance
A metering plug tells you exactly what one device consumes. This is how you identify the ageing fridge running almost continuously, or the water heater reheating all night.
What measurement usually reveals
- Air conditioning dominates in Egyptian summers — often more than everything else combined.
- Water heaters cost more than expected, because they reheat around the clock to hold temperature nobody is using.
- Old refrigerators run far longer than new ones, and the difference frequently justifies replacement on its own.
- Standby draw is real but small. It is worth addressing after the large items, not before.
What to do with the data
Measurement only saves money when it changes behaviour or scheduling.
- Schedule the water heater to heat before it is needed rather than continuously. This is usually the single largest domestic saving available.
- Pre-cool rather than run continuously. Cooling a room before occupancy and maintaining costs less than cooling a hot room on arrival.
- Replace the worst offender. Once you know a specific appliance consumes disproportionately, replacement maths becomes concrete rather than speculative.
- Fix what runs when nobody is there. Metering exposes loads running overnight that nobody intended.
Choosing metering hardware
For whole-property measurement, a three-phase energy meter at the board covers everything. For per-circuit, use relays or modules with power measurement built in. For per-appliance, metering plugs are the simplest option and need no electrician.
Compact DIN-rail meters matter in practice because Egyptian distribution boards are often crowded, and a full-size meter simply will not fit.
A realistic expectation
Metering does not reduce consumption by itself. It tells you where consumption is, which is what makes every subsequent decision cheaper and better targeted. The saving comes from the changes you make afterwards.
