Most smart switches need a neutral wire, and many Egyptian switch boxes do not have one. Traditional wiring runs live to the switch and switched-live to the lamp, with neutral going straight to the fitting. A smart device needs continuous power to stay connected, and without neutral it cannot get it.
Why the neutral matters
A plain mechanical switch simply breaks the live conductor. It needs no power itself.
A smart switch contains a radio, a processor and a relay, all of which must stay powered even when the light is off — otherwise it could never be switched back on remotely. That requires a complete circuit: live in, neutral out. With no neutral at the box, there is no return path.
How to check
Have a qualified electrician switch off the circuit and open one switch plate. You are looking at how many cables enter the box:
- Two conductors (usually red and black, or brown and blue) — likely live and switched-live. No neutral.
- Three or more, with an unused conductor parked in the box — a neutral is probably present.
Do not assume by colour. Egyptian installations vary considerably and older work frequently reuses colours in non-standard ways. Verify with a tester rather than by eye.
Three ways around it
1. Put the relay at the light, not the switch
The neutral is almost always present at the ceiling rose or light fitting, because the lamp needs it. A compact relay installed there gets both conductors it needs, while the existing wall switch becomes an input to it.
This is usually the best answer, and it is why Mini-format relays exist — they fit in the shallow space at a fitting.
2. Use a no-neutral device
Some dimmers operate without a neutral by drawing a tiny current through the lamp itself. This works, with a caveat: with very low-wattage LED lamps that trickle can cause flicker or a faint glow when off. A bypass module fitted at the lamp resolves it.
3. Use battery-powered wireless switches
A battery Bluetooth or Zigbee switch sticks to the wall anywhere and needs no wiring at all. Pair it with a relay installed at the fitting, and you get full control with no new cable. It also means you can put a switch where there never was one — beside a bed, for instance.
What not to do
Do not use the earth conductor as a neutral. It appears to work and it is dangerous — it puts current on the protective conductor, defeats earth-leakage protection, and can energise the casing of appliances elsewhere on the circuit.
If in doubt, run a proper neutral or use one of the three approaches above.
